Tallaght Driving Test Routes: Roads and Areas to Practice

A local guide to the roads, roundabouts, and estates you should practice before sitting your RSA test at the Tallaght test centre.

The Tallaght test centre sits in one of the busier corners of south Dublin, and the routes examiners use reflect that. You'll deal with dual carriageways, multi-lane roundabouts, tight housing estates, and traffic-heavy junctions, often within the same 30 minute test. Where the Tallaght test centre is

The centre is based in the Cookstown Industrial Estate area, close to the Cookstown Way and within easy reach of the N81, the Belgard Road, and the Tallaght bypass. That location matters because examiners can send you in almost any direction: toward Jobstown, up toward Firhouse, across to Kingswood, or down along the Greenhills Road corridor. Practicing only one side of the centre is a common mistake.

Typical route corridors around Tallaght

Cookstown and Belgard Road

Expect to leave the centre onto local industrial estate roads before joining Belgard Road. Lane discipline here is critical because the road has multiple lanes feeding roundabouts and traffic light junctions in quick succession. Learners often get caught in the wrong lane approaching the Belgard roundabout or the junction near the Luas line.

The N81 and Jobstown

Some routes head out along the N81 toward Jobstown, Fettercairn, or Killinarden. This section tests your ability to hold speed on a national road, judge safe gaps for lane changes, and handle busy signalised junctions. The area around Jobstown has residential estates with narrow entries that examiners like for reverse-around-a-corner manoeuvres.

Firhouse, Old Bawn, and Bohernabreena

Eastbound routes may take you through Old Bawn Road toward Firhouse. This corridor has a mix of 50 km/h and 60 km/h zones, school areas, and pedestrian crossings. The Firhouse Road itself has fast-changing conditions with parked cars and cyclists to watch for.

Kingswood, Kilnamanagh, and Greenhills

West and north of the centre, you'll find quieter residential areas that are ideal for testing your estate driving, junction observation, and turnabouts. Kingswood and Kilnamanagh in particular have the kind of quiet cul-de-sacs and T-junctions examiners use for manoeuvres.

Roundabouts you should know

Tallaght is roundabout-heavy, and this is where a lot of learners lose marks. Focus your practice on:

• The Belgard roundabout, with Luas tracks and multi-lane approaches
• Roundabouts along the Tallaght bypass feeding the N81
• Smaller estate roundabouts around Kingswood and Fettercairn
• The junction network around the Square and Cookstown Way
