Driver Hand Signals
Hand signals used by drivers in vehicles
1. Driver Going Straight On
Driver indicating they are continuing straight ahead
What you see:
Driver's arm extended upward palm forward.
2. Driver Turning Left (Your Right)
Driver indicating a left turn from your perspective
What you see:
Driver's left arm reaches across their body.
3. Driver Turning Right (Your Left)
Driver indicating a right turn from your perspective
What you see:
Driver's arm extended out the driver side window.
4. Driver Slowing Down or Stopping
Driver indicating they are slowing down or coming to a stop
What you see:
Driver's right arm extended out with hand moving up and down.
5. Driver Turning Left (Your Left)
Driver indicating a left turn from your perspective
What you see:
Driver's right arm extended straight out through the left window.
6. Driver Turning Right (Your Right)
Driver indicating a right turn from your perspective
What you see:
Driver's right arm extended straight out through the right window.
6. How the Tester Checks You
Describe the Signal
They'll ask you to describe a signal ("Show me how you'd signal slowing down")
Physically Demonstrate
They'll ask you to physically do them in the seat
Key Point
Do them confidently. Hesitation kills marks.
7. Quick Tip to Remember Them
- Straight arm = direction.
- Bent arm up = right turn (if you can't use the right window).
- Up-and-down = slowing.
- Forward sweep = overtaking.
