1️⃣ Before Booking Anything

I have a verified MyGovID
I know which permit I'm applying for (Category B – Car)
2️⃣ Book the Theory Test

Click Book a Test
Choose Driver Theory Test
Select Category B
Choose my test centre OR online proctored test
Pick a date & time
Pay the €45 fee
Received email confirmation
3️⃣ Prepare for the Theory Test
Select All
Installed official study app (RSA / iTheory)
Completed all practice questions
Scoring 45/45 consistently
Practised hazard perception if needed (Only relevant if doing online test)
4️⃣ Test Day
Select All
Bring PSC
Bring booking confirmation email
Arrive 10–15 minutes early
Passed the theory test 🎉
Collected/downloaded the Theory Test Certificate
5️⃣ Apply for Learner Permit (THIS starts the 6-month clock)
Select All
Go to
NDLS.ie
Click Apply Online
Log in using MyGovID
Upload Theory Test Certificate
Confirm Category B application
Pay the €35 fee
Submitted the application successfully
Permit arrived by post (Usually 7–10 working days)
6️⃣ After You Receive Your Learner Permit
Select All
Checked the issue date on the permit
Counted 6 months ahead (this is the earliest driving-test date)
Created an account on
my.rsa.ie
Tick Short Notice Cancellation box (This helps you get a MUCH earlier test)
7️⃣ Start Driving Lessons (EDT)
Select All
Found an ADI instructor near me
Completed Lesson 1
Started logging EDT lessons online
Progressing toward 12 EDT lessons
8️⃣ When Ready
Select All
Book driving test on
my.rsa.ie
Car insurance sorted
Car with L plates
Continue checking cancellations for earlier dates
